Technical Tips

Timely information to keep you up and running efficiently

Worn Rocker Boxes Can Cost You Money

Do you know how much worn rocker boxes may cost in lost fuel mileage?

Today's engines are averaging between 6.4 and 6.8 miles per gallon.

Worn rocker boxes can rob an engine of performance and can cause up to a 10 percent decrease in fuel mileage.

If your is only producing six or less miles to the gallon of furl, maybe it is time to change rocker boxes.

Adding 10 percent to your fuel mileage by replacing a worn rocker may reduce the cost of operating up to $9.01 per day.

A truck running an average of 21 days per month will save $2,270.52.  Fuel savings are achieved from optimum valve performance.

Geometry

Geometry is one of the main causes of premature valve failure.

The geometry of the main causes of premature valve failure. The geometry of the valve and rocker is a difficult measurement to calculate, however, it is important. When the geometry is incorrect, it causes uneven wear of the valve stem and guide, which results in engine failure. As the guide wears, the clearances increase which will cause excess oil consumption. More serious and costly damage is caused when improper geometry causes the valve to close off center of the seat, resulting in valve stem fatigue at the head and deeper groove areas of the valve. This leads to the valve breaking at either place.

Although geometry is difficult to measure, there are indicators to watch for and precautions you take to minimize your problems. Properly installed heights must always be adhered to. If after installing a new guide you must replace a seat to properly match the valve, pay close attention to how the rocker is making contact to the valve tip. It is possible that the center line of the valve and guide operation has changed and is causing a misalignment of the rocker and valve tip. The least amount of work performed that can cause geometry change, the better.

Attention to Detail Makes This Employee Special

As with all DHP Employees, individual customer service is the most important part of the daily work day. Bob Howard, DHP’s Assistant Shop Manager has been working towards 100% customer satisfaction for the last 15 years.

While Bob usually runs the surface mill, he also performs quality control checks on every part DHP re-manufactures.

"Since I have a lot of experience in this shop, I can spot a mistake before it gets too far down the production line. We have to keep the production up while making sure the customer gets a quality product. If something is not right to me, I mark it with a red tag. Th guys in the shop then know they’d better go back and double check their work before that part leaves DHP. We have to make sure the job is done right so the customer is satisfied and will come back."

Bob doesn't’t just spend all of his time at DHP. He has a five year old daughter, Kayla, that keeps him busy. He is also a "sports nut." He likes to play tennis and basketball, "all of those sports that help to keep me in shape. I’m fortunate to be healthy and want to make sure I live a long life."

Bob joined the Army at 18, where he became a drill sergeant. It taught him to be dependable and responsible on the job. It also taught him that "everyone has to pull his own weight."

"My dad taught me that if you are going to do a job, do it right or don’t do it at all. That’s the way I feel about it from the smallest job to the biggest job, I tackle it with the same enthusiasm. My personal guarantee of quality is on every remanufactured product."

They made the big switch to quality DHP heads because they were "tired of selling brand X. They are now selling a head they’d be proud to sell store wide," said Jim Ballard, sales rep for DHP.
